Senior Occupational Health Nurse - 102568
Division: EH-Environ, Health, & Safety
Berkeley Lab's Environment, Health, & Safety (EHS) division is hiring a Senior Occupational Health Nurse to join the team. Reporting to the Clinical Manager, this role involves applying occupational nursing principles to protect worker health and ensure a safe workplace. Responsibilities include performing medical exams, treating acute injuries and illnesses per protocols, and supporting workplace wellness initiatives.
What You Will Do:
Clinical (60%):
- Evaluate and treat acute or serious injuries (e.g., injections, triage, concussions) and illnesses (e.g., chest pain, seizures, respiratory issues) or chemical exposures, as per protocols. Use clinical judgment to determine proper care, whether to refer to a hospital, physician, or return to work. Collaborate with the Clinical Manager and Site Occupational Medical Director as needed.
- Support worksite health and safety programs by conducting medical surveillance exams (e.g., histories, physicals, blood tests, audiograms, pulmonary function tests).
- Identify and assess health problems and hazards through work-site surveys, toxicological research, and analysis of OSHA logs and accident reports. Stay informed about workplace hazards and consult with the safety team to improve practices and eliminate hazards.
- Work with the Clinical Manager, Site Occupational Medical Director, clinic, and HR staff to coordinate and monitor services for injured workers to ensure effective recovery and return to work.
- Protect personal health information as required by law.
Administrative/Programmatic (35%):
- Lead or assist in developing, administering, and documenting health programs, including AAAHC re-accreditation, such as injury prevention, treatment, medical surveillance, health promotion, disease management, and case management.
- Participate in reviewing clinical care and program effectiveness, documenting quality improvement studies and outcomes.
- Use nursing and program administration knowledge to advise on and improve Health Services programs.
- Explain and address questions about occupational health and wellness programs to employees and managers.
- Attend offsite meetings for medical education or to represent LBNL at national or Department of Energy contractor meetings.
- Analyze, document, and present Health Services program data to various stakeholders.
EHS Division/Department Support (5%):
- Prepare accurate written reports and ensure they are entered into the CHESS database, Occupational Health Record system, or other future electronic medical records.
- Serve as a spokesperson for specialized projects or programs and represent Berkeley Lab in interactions with DOE, regulators, peers, clients, and management.
- Coordinate with Human Resources, EH&S, and other specialists (e.g., industrial hygiene, safety, radiation assessment) and external agencies (e.g., local public health, UC, Alta Bates/Summit Medical Center).
- Provide essential support during emergencies to protect health, safety, and Lab operations.
- Contribute to DOE-required Performance Indicators.
- Identify and implement improvements in assigned program areas.
What is Required:
- Graduate of a Bachelor’s level nursing program.
- Licensed as a registered nurse in the State of California.
- BLS/CPR certificate.
- 5-7 years of experience working as a registered nurse
- Demonstrate strong clinical judgment, collaborative and administrative capabilities, substantial nursing expertise, and demonstrated knowledge of professional nursing principles with strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, State of California and local regulations, including worker’s compensation laws and case management experience.
- Proven excellent verbal and written communications, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Ability to effectively interact with and talk to small and large groups of employees, including managers, to explain and answer questions about occupational health and wellness programs.
- Ability to travel as needed to attend meetings, receive medical education, and/or represent LBNL.
- Proficient with standard computer systems and applications in a professional business setting.
- Ability to utilize computer programs and software to analyze, document and present data and information. Ability to multitask and prioritize in a dynamic environment.
- Certification or the ability to gain certification in spirometry, audiometry, and CPR, and other certification as determined by the Clinical Manager.
- Ability to lift, carry and transport up to 50 lbs. of educational materials to meetings and displays.
- Evidence of immunity or declination of vaccination in accordance with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen rule.
Desired Qualifications:
- Certification as an occupational health nurse (COHN or COHN-S).
- Nurse practitioner with required occupational health experience.
- Familiarity with additional occupational health fields such as industrial hygiene and occupational safety.
- Certification as an occupational health nurse (COHN or COHN-S).
- Nurse Practitioner Furnishing and Controlled Substances (DEA) registration certificates.
- Urgent care or emergency room experience.
- Statistical analysis skills.
- Ability to interpret regulations. Knowledge of the regulatory process and experience in monitoring regulatory developments.
Notes:
- This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
- The Senior Occupational Health Nurse is expected to pay $130,000.00 - $157,000.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $113,940.00 - $192,276.00 annually for the job classification of H70.3.
- Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
- It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience.
