Position Description

The Registered Triage/Float Nurse will utilize the nursing process to provide direct and indirect patient care in the Primary Medical Clinic. This position has a strong focus on walk-in and telephone triage and allows for a large degree of autonomy. The Nurse in this position will work with a team of medical providers, including a psychiatrist, and nurses to facilitate patient flow and must be able to identify urgent/emergent situations. Therefore, strong physical assessment skills and triage knowledge is essential. Due to fluctuations in patient volume, cross-training in other areas of the clinic is mandatory.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to obtaining patient history and physical assessment, application of orthopedic devices, wound care, IV therapy, assisting with minor surgical procedures and administration of medications, immunizations, and treatments. This position will also assist with training and onboarding of new triage and float nurses.

This position holds significant responsibility as a “remote essential” role. In challenging situations such as inclement weather or emergencies, when the Pat Walker Health Center or campus needs to close, our dedicated team of medical professionals will be on standby to serve our campus community’s needs through telehealth if deemed appropriate for the patient’s complaint.

The decision to conduct telehealth evaluations will depend on various factors, including the nature of the medical issue (in compliance with Arkansas State Medical Board regulations), patient preference, and the availability of resources. Our primary goal is to ensure that the UA community has access to quality healthcare even during unexpected closures.

To be fully prepared for such events, all staff members must take their UA issued laptops home nightly during the work week and each weekend. This way, they can readily assist with patient access and telehealth services if the medical clinics are unexpectedly closed during the following business day. By functioning cohesively as a team, our medical units will ensure that adequate medical care remains accessible to our UA community with each team member sharing this responsibility equally.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
